Nubbins | Black Squirrel Black Squirrels are common in many parts of the midwest; just not where I live. This one is obviously a mix; probably with a Fox Squirrel. Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.

Gray Fox or Black Squirrel | Black Squirrel Black squirrels are actually grey squirrels with a genetic fault caused by interspecies breeding between the gray squirrel and the fox squirrel. For the whole story with all images, see Gray Fox or Black Squirrel | a 7 Image Story.

Nikon 1 V3 for Walkabout Wildlife | Black Squirrel Black Squirrels are not as common as Gray Squirrels around the Midwest. This guy was busy, busy getting ready for the winter ahead. Although Black Squirrels are fairly common in parts of the Midwest, I rarely see them except when hiking in Michigan. The Black Squirrel is subgroup of both the eastern gray squirrel and the fox squirrel. The population of black squirrels is relatively small causing many people to admire them. For the whole story with all images, see Nikon 1 V3 for Walkabout Wildlife.

Black Squirrel Although Black Squirrels are common in the midwest, there are none in my area or along my most regular walkabouts. So, whenever I get a chance to capture an image in my travels, I take it. This image appeared to my along a walkabout in a state park in Michigan.

Black/Gray Squirrel This little critter may be a cross between a black and a gray squirrel. He’s a cute little guy, but not all black and not all gray. Clearly, he’s not afraid of people since he posed for a while; like his own personal photo op.

This Black Squirrel appears to be hard at work preparing for winter.
