Nikon D3x Bread Sticks | Hyalite Canyon

11/22/2021 Nikon D3x Bread Sticks | Hyalite Canyon

Nikon D3x Bread Sticks | Hyalite Canyon  The trail starts wide at the lower altitudes; yet narrows a bit as the climb gets steeper.  The hike gets tougher when the trail gets steeper and the trail needs switchbacks.  Notice the tree roots and rocks in the trail.  Good hiking boots help.  For more information and images, see Hyalite Canyon Hike | a 7 Image Story.

The Back Story  This stretch of the trail seems relatively flat compared to the steep switchbacks.  A simple click just took a short stop and click.  Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.

Nikon D3x Bread Sticks | B-25 Champaign Gal

11/19/2021 Nikon D3x Bread Sticks | B-25 Champaign Gal

Nikon D3x Bread Sticks | B-25 Champaign Gal    The B-25 Champaign Gal was taxiing for takeoff at Grimes Field in Urbana, OH before the 70th Doolittle Raider Reunion.  Twenty B-25 aircraft attended the reunion the next day on 17 Apr 2013.  Champaign Gal is based at Grimes Field as part of the Champaign Air Museum Still, similar images could have easily been taken at numerous airfields around the world in 1942.  The image in black & while seems more realistic for a WWII image.

The Real Story  On 18 Apr 1942, sixteen brave flight crews took off from the USS Hornet aircraft carrier in B-25 bombers to strike the Japanese mainland in a daring mission early in WWII.  Of the 80 men on the mission, five still remained with us to celebrate the 70th anniversary of their successful mission.  This reunion remembers them and all the brave WWII air crews who fought and sometimes died to keep us a free nation. For a first hand account of B-25 activities at the 70th Doolittle Raider reunion: B-25s at the 70th Doolittle Raiders Reunion.  To see the nose art of all the B-25s at the reunion: B-25 Nose Art at the 70th Doolittle Raiders Reunion.

The Back Story  Luckily, for this event, I was able to get a media pass so I could take a tram out to the end of the taxiway for possibly a better shot in the media area.  After capturing hundreds of images, this image is one of my favorites.  Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.

Nikon D3x Bread Sticks | Wolf Portrait

11/18/2021 Nikon D3x Bread Sticks | Wolf Portrait

Nikon D3x Bread Sticks | Wolf Portrait    Normally, I don’t capture images of captive wildlife.  Wolf Park treats their wolves like they were in the wild and conducts wolf research in conjunction with major universities and national parks.  They offer a few opportunities each year for photographers to learn and photograph from inside a large 40+ acre enclosure with the wolves.   It’s an interesting experience; not necessarily for the faint of heart.  For more information and images, see Wolf Park Wolves | a 7 Image Story.

The Back Story   This image was captured inside the wolf enclosure.  Some folks have asked me, if the wolf was close.  Well, with a 200mm lens, he wasn’t right next to me, but he was still pretty close; a few feet.  If this wolf had not been socialized, the experience would have been more than a bit scary.  Of course, in the wild, I would have maybe one chance in ten million to get this close to a wolf.   Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.

11/12/2021 Nikon D3x Bread Sticks | Zander & Nick

Nikon D3x Bread Sticks | Zander & Nick    Love everyone and they will love you back.  What goes around, comes around.  A Pug and any boy always have a special bond.  Pugs, like most dogs, instinctively know little girls and little boys are special.  Pugs seem to love them just a bit more when they are around them.  For more Pug wisdom, see Pug Wisdom | a 7 Image Story.

Nikon D3x Bread Sticks | Midwest Wild Wind

11/11/2021 Nikon D3x Bread Sticks | Midwest Wild Wind

Nikon D3x Bread Sticks | Midwest Wild Wind    Witness the changing landscape of the American farm from family farm to corporate windmills; while, at least, the lightning stays the same. This image was captured in northern Illinois, close to the farm where I grew up.  Wow, has the land and farming ever changed since I was a kid.  At one time, the family farm was the mainstay of American agriculture.  Now, the family farms are all but gone.  The few that remain are huge.  The hedge rows are gone and one farm abuts to another.  The GPS tells the machinery operator which farm is which.  And, livestock production is mostly grown in large operations; not on the farm as it once was.  Most farms are now owned by corporations who hire the work done.  Still, lightning is lightning.

The Back Story  A simple click after stopping along a gravel country road made this image.   Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.

Nikon D3x Bread Sticks | Western Sandpiper

11/09/2021 Nikon D3x Bread Sticks | Western Sandpiper

Nikon D3x Bread Sticks | Western Sandpiper   After a long cold winter, a walk on a sandy beach seems to revive the soul.  On this day, I just needed sand between my toes; the very concept of warm instead of cold.

Nikon D3x Bread Sticks | Nevada City Train

11/05/2021 Nikon D3x Bread Sticks | Nevada City Train

Nikon D3x Bread Sticks | Nevada City Train    This old train is permanently parked outside the Nevada City train station.  The old mining camp of Nevada City started when gold was discovered nearby in 1863.  Nevada City was comprised mostly of miners working several nearby mining districts.  In the beginning, the mining district was part of the Idaho Territory.  In fact, until neighboring Virginia City became the Montana territorial capitol in 1865, there was no law except for the miner’s court.  Now, although this old west town has no residents, it’s maintained by folks in Virginia city.  It’s a cool place to visit in Montana.  For more information and images, see Nevada City | a 7 Image Story.

The Back Story   This image was captured with a simple click while walking by the train station.   Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.
