Calm Waters Sometimes the river flows so slowly and quietly it seems like time is standing still. Add a little reflection and the illusion is complete.

Illinois River Sunset While driving along the Illinois River tonight as the sun set in the southwest, I just had to stop for a quick, simple click. Although the light was fading fast and the sun had already set, enough light remained for a handheld.
Great Blue Heron

Obviously, this Great Blue Heron has just been fishing. Great Blue Herons are a relatively common bird in Illinois. This guy seemed happy to watch the river go by, after his meal.

Juvenile Bald Eagle Bald Eagles will soon be arriving at Starved Rock State Park. A few pairs nest there all year, but in January as the rivers freeze, hundreds of eagles come to fish near the locks in the river. The locks are kept open year around for commercial boats and the water near the locks remain ice free all winter.
