Nikon D200 Soup | Badlands NP

9/14/2021 Nikon D200 Soup | Badlands NP

Nikon D200 Soup | Badlands NP   This storm over the Badlands brings the Great Plains to mind.  The Badlands are along the western edge of the Great Plains.  The prairie seems to stretch forever, even on this rolling terrain.  Thunderstorms rumble over the Badlands frequently during the summer months.  In fact, they are one of the trademarks of the Great American Prairie, which ranges from the Rocky Mountains to the Midwest and from Canada to Oklahoma.  Nothing reminds us more of America more than the Great American Prairie.  For additional information and images, see The Great American Prairie | a 7 Image Story and America the Beautiful | a 7 Image Story.

The Back Story    Just as I was about to leave the north entrance of Badlands NP, I noticed the thunderstorm northwest of the park.  I stopped the car and used it as a tripod.  This image was captured by shear luck.  The camera did not have a lightning detector on it.  Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.

Landscape Portfolio | Badlands' Valley

Landscape Portfolio | Badlands’ Valley   Between the mid May and mid June the normally brown and tan landscape of the Badlands turns green and and the wild flowers bloom.  My favorite time for Badlands Spring remains the 2nd week of June.  Also, it’s a great time see wildlife babies.  For more information and images, see The Badlands.

The Back Story  Stop along the main road in Badlands NP, climb a small hill, and make a not so simple click.  One must be careful.  Falling off a rock can be hazardous to your health.

Landscape Portfolio | Rocks at the Badlands

Landscape Portfolio | Rocks at the Badlands   The Badlands’ rock formations are distinguished by their vibrant red, tan, and white stripes.  Each stripe represents a different layer of sediment brought there by rivers and seas, millions of years ago.  Over time, the mud and grit hardened into layered sedimentary rock.  After sedimentary rock formed, the White, Bad, and Cheyenne rivers carved the flat floodplain into  sloping hills, jagged cliff faces, and precarious spires.  For more information and images, see The Badlands.

Landscape Portfolio | Looking over the Badlands   The Badlands are truly inspiring. There’s something rather spiritual about Badlands NP.   It’s one of the my favorite places to photograph.  For more information and images, see The Badlands.

The Back Story  There’s nothing like rising at o’dark thirty to capture the sunrise. It’s hard to decide whether to look for landscapes or wildlife or both.

Landscape Portfolio | Lone Tree on the Badlands

Landscape Portfolio | Lone Tree on the Badlands   Nothing says Great American Prairie like a lone tree on the rolling mixed grass prairie of the Badlands.  Lone tree images convey sense of quiet solitude. They remind us how a solitary figure stands tall against all odds. The lone tree provides raw strength to the image as well as a sense of resilience and perseverance.

The Back Story    Like many photographers, the lone tree is one of my favorite subjects.  Actually, unlike many of my images, I visited this site in Badlands NP many times before the clouds provided a nice background.  Then, I moved around the tree to get the right angle on the composition until this basic image filled my viewfinder.  The wind was making the leaves on the tree move too much so I waited and waited and waited.  All the while, the clouds were moving as well.  So, I waited longer.  The early morning light was beginning to change.  Finally, everything lined up.  The clouds looked nice. The wind calmed down a bit.  Everything was right with the world in front of me.  Click!

Landscape Portfolio | Bison over the Horizon

Landscape Portfolio | Bison over the Horizon   At one time, massive Bison herds roamed the grasslands of North America. Today, small herds are maintained in parts of Canada and several states in the USA.  Many national parks also preserve Bison. This image reminds me of how the landscape might have once looked.  For more information, see American Bison | a 7 Image Story.

The Back Story    An evening drive on the north ridge road in the Badlands NP yielded a nice image.
