Skiplanes & Seaplanes | Piper Cub Flying in Snow

Skiplanes & Seaplanes | Piper Cub Flying in Snow

Skiplanes & Seaplanes | Piper Cub Flying in Snow  Most pilots like to fly the The Piper J-3 Cub on skis.  The skis add a bit of spice to life in the winter.  Add a snow shower and we pilots have dreams of being a bush pilot.  It brings us back to the basics.  You hand prop it.  It has a stick, not a yoke.

The Back Story  With intermittent snow showers in the afternoon around the airport, it was not difficult to capture a few images. For more information on aviation photography, go to Nikon 1 V3 for Aviation | a 7 Image Story.

Skiplanes & Seaplanes | Cub & Super Cub

Skiplanes & Seaplanes | Cub & Super Cub

Skiplanes & Seaplanes | Cub & Super Cub  Two iconic airplanes flying in nice snow make for memorable images.  The Cub and Super Cub are having fun on Skiplane Weekend.  This image is one of my favorite aviation images.

The Back Story    Of course, the difficulty to capturing good airplane images in the winter with snow, is to keep the shutter speed low enough to blur the prop and pan well enough to keep the wings and fuselage in sharp focus while dealing with bright, hard mid-day light.  A 1/125s shutter speed is about as high as I like for a click like this one.  Luckily this day had bright overcast in between snow showers.  Getting just the right spacing with just the right blowing snow while the camera and I were freezing meant several hundred burst mode images.

Skiplanes & Seaplanes | Think it will Snow

Skiplanes & Seaplanes | Think it will Snow   Light powder snow settled down on the wings of this Piper J-3 Cub.  The snow was relatively dry and really did not stick to the wing.  Actually, it would fly away under the force of my breath.

The Back Story    This Piper J-3 Cub sat outside in the snow during widely scattered snow showers.  After the snow shower passed, starting the engine blew all the snow off.

Skiplanes & Seaplanes | C-185 Snow Vortices

Skiplanes & Seaplanes | C-185 Snow Vortices

Skiplanes & Seaplanes | C-185 Snow Vortices  This image is all about the wing tip vortices stirring the snow on top of the ice.  Air sliding off the end of the wing tips create the vortices.  Normally, they are invisible, but today the blowing snow provides us picture perfect vortices.

The Back Story    Not many folks hold a lake party in the middle of the winter.  However, as part of a New Years party on the day after new years day, this Cessna 185 was again giving ski plane rides on Pleasant Lake.

Skiplanes & Seaplanes | C-185 Landing on Lake Ice

Skiplanes & Seaplanes | C-185 Landing on Lake Ice   This landing view really shows off the skis.  They seem bigger and wider than you might think.  Notice the wing tip vortices stirring the snow on top of the ice.

The Back Story    Not many folks hold a lake party in the middle of the winter.  However, as part of a New Years Day party, this Cessna 185 was giving ski plane rides on Pleasant Lake.  The lake is pretty small so good piloting technique is necessary.  To complicate matters, the mid-teen temperatures made waiting on the frozen lake for the next landing a bit chilly.

Skiplanes & Seaplanes | Hank in a Super Cub   The Piper Super Cub, Alaska’s favorite bush plane, makes for great fun flying.  It’s a great performing seaplane on straight or amphibious floats.

The Back Story    On the weekend before Oshkosh, a small group of pilots ranging from heavy iron pilots to bush pilots, get together for back to the basics float plane flying.  This image comes from one of those weekends, a few years ago. My brother grabbed my camera and captured this image.  No, it’s not a selfie.
