Oshkosh 2022 | Douglas A-1 Skyraider  The A-1 Skyraider entered service in December 1946 as the next generation of WWII dive bombers and torpedo bombers.  It saw extensive action in the Korean War by the U.S. Navy and USMC.  In the Vietnam War, it again saw action as primary ground support attack aircraft and as one of the Skyraider’s most famous roles: the “Sandy” helicopter escort on search and rescue operations.  With a cruising speed of 170 to 200 kts, a level attack speed of 260 kts, and a maximum sea level red-line speed of 410 kts, the Skyraider hugged the terrain below enemy radar coverage and delivered ordnance loads up to 8000 pounds.  Its pilots and crews bestowed many names on the Skyraider including Sandy, Spad, Hobo, Zorro, and Firefly. The Skyraider was retired by the U.S. military in the 1970’s after a total of 3,180 planes were built.   Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.

8/07/2022 Oshkosh 2022 | Curtiss P-40 Warhawk

Oshkosh 2022 | Curtiss P-40 Warhawk  The shark mouth of Flying Tigers nose art that adorned the fuselages of the famed American Volunteer Group (AVG) is one of the best known examples of nose art in WWII.  The Curtiss P-40 served in almost every theater of the Second World War.  Both praised and cursed, it bore much of the brunt of the air warfare.  With no supercharger, it was designed as a medium-altitude fighter.  Still, it was available in large quantities and was both sturdy and docile.  So, it withstood  the punishment battle well.   Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.

8/05/2022 Oshkosh 2022 | Vought F4U Corsair

Oshkosh 2022 | Vought F4U Corsair  The F4U Corsair looks quite distinctive with its gull wings.  It also makes a distinctive sound caused by noise from the engine and wing-root air inlets, which earned it the nick-name “Whistling Death”  The “bent wings” allowed deck clearance of its large 13′ 4″ propeller.  And, the large prop allowed for a R-2800 Double Wasp, 18 cylinder double radial 2250 horsepower engine.  It could out fight, out climb, and out run any prop driven enemy aircraft at the time.   Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.

8/02/2022 Oshkosh 2022 | American Flag Zooming

Oshkosh 2022 | American Flag Zooming   American look alike flags flown with non-standard colors are somewhat controversial and of course, not official. The black and white flag has one blue stripe on one side and one red stripe on the other side.  The Blue Line represents the police officer and the courage they find deep inside when faced with insurmountable odds.  The Black background was designed as a constant reminder of our fallen brother and sister officers. The Red Line is a symbol used by fire departments to show respect for firefighters injured and killed in the line of duty.   Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.
