Nov 22, 2021 | AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8 ED VR II, Hyalite Canyon, Nikon D3x, Nikon D3x Bread Sticks
Nikon D3x Bread Sticks | Hyalite Canyon The trail starts wide at the lower altitudes; yet narrows a bit as the climb gets steeper. The hike gets tougher when the trail gets steeper and the trail needs switchbacks. Notice the tree roots and rocks in the trail. Good hiking boots help. For more information and images, see Hyalite Canyon Hike | a 7 Image Story.
The Back Story This stretch of the trail seems relatively flat compared to the steep switchbacks. A simple click just took a short stop and click. Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.

Nikon D3x Bread Sticks | Yellowstone Thermal Spring The thermal features at Yellowstone, while very hot and dangerous to wildlife and people, can also be very colorful and inviting to visitors.

Nikon D3x Bread Sticks | Oxbow Bend Aspens The Aspens turn magical by fall’s setting sun in the Grand Tetons. This morning when photographing Oxbow Bend, I turned around to see a beautiful Aspen grove. Returning just before sunset, I was rewarded again with the setting sun shining through the Aspens. Nikon D3x Bread Sticks | B-25 Champaign Gal The B-25 Champaign Gal was taxiing for takeoff at Grimes Field in Urbana, OH before the 70th Doolittle Raider Reunion. Twenty B-25 aircraft attended the reunion the next day on 17 Apr 2013. Champaign Gal is based at Grimes Field as part of the Champaign Air Museum. Still, similar images could have easily been taken at numerous airfields around the world in 1942. The image in black & while seems more realistic for a WWII image.
The Real Story On 18 Apr 1942, sixteen brave flight crews took off from the USS Hornet aircraft carrier in B-25 bombers to strike the Japanese mainland in a daring mission early in WWII. Of the 80 men on the mission, five still remained with us to celebrate the 70th anniversary of their successful mission. This reunion remembers them and all the brave WWII air crews who fought and sometimes died to keep us a free nation. For a first hand account of B-25 activities at the 70th Doolittle Raider reunion: B-25s at the 70th Doolittle Raiders Reunion. To see the nose art of all the B-25s at the reunion: B-25 Nose Art at the 70th Doolittle Raiders Reunion.
The Back Story Luckily, for this event, I was able to get a media pass so I could take a tram out to the end of the taxiway for possibly a better shot in the media area. After capturing hundreds of images, this image is one of my favorites. Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.

Nov 18, 2021 | AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8 ED VR II, Gray Wolf, Nikon D3x, Nikon D3x Bread Sticks
Nikon D3x Bread Sticks | Wolf Portrait Normally, I don’t capture images of captive wildlife. Wolf Park treats their wolves like they were in the wild and conducts wolf research in conjunction with major universities and national parks. They offer a few opportunities each year for photographers to learn and photograph from inside a large 40+ acre enclosure with the wolves. It’s an interesting experience; not necessarily for the faint of heart. For more information and images, see Wolf Park Wolves | a 7 Image Story.
The Back Story This image was captured inside the wolf enclosure. Some folks have asked me, if the wolf was close. Well, with a 200mm lens, he wasn’t right next to me, but he was still pretty close; a few feet. If this wolf had not been socialized, the experience would have been more than a bit scary. Of course, in the wild, I would have maybe one chance in ten million to get this close to a wolf. Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.

Nikon D3x Bread Sticks | Patagonia Lake Patagonia Lake lies just south of Tucson. In the winter, when this image was captured, it was 60ºF. It’s a rather pleasant lake and close enough to Tucson to make a nice day trip. Sunsets aren’t too bad either. See Way Cool | a 7 Image Story for more of my favorite off beat images.

Nikon D3x Bread Sticks | Old West Ranch This old Montana sod ranch house seems small against the big sky and mountains. The 9×16 scale helps portray the big sky landscape.
The Back Story After pulling off the Montana highway to make a photograph, the gate to the ranch was locked. So, I used a fence post as a tripod and captured this image. Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.

Nov 15, 2021 | AF-S 17-35mm f/2.8D IF-ED, Nikon D3x, Nikon D3x Bread Sticks, Yellowstone
Nikon D3x Bread Sticks | Yellowstone River Yellowstone’s first snow of the year in mid November made for a great day to capture images along the Yellowstone River. A snowstorm had fallen the night before, covering everything in sparkling fresh snow. The Yellowstone River, flowing north out of the park, was not frozen due to the thermal features of the park. It does not look like much of a river in this image, but it becomes a nice size river as it travels further north. For more Yellowstone images and information, see Yellowstone NP Wild | a 7 Image Story.
The Back Story There’s nothing like Yellowstone in the winter. Yellowstone always provides perspective and introspection. Every time I go to Yellowstone, the experience changes with new vistas, wildlife, challenges, and accomplishments. We only had a few minutes to capture this image between snow showers. Although it was midday, the sun was shining through a thin cloud layer softening the light. Blowing snow and the calming sound of water ripples from the river completed the experience. Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.
