Jul 7, 2021 | 1 VR 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6, Nikon 1 V1, Nikon 1 V1 Potpourri, Piper PA-23 Geronimo Apache

Nikon 1 V1 Potpourri | Geronimo A Geronimo is a remanufactured Piper PA-23 Apache with many mods. This beautiful example was flying around the airport with a multi-engine student pilot taking his check ride. And, yes, he passed with flying colors.
The Back Story While driving past the airport, I noticed this beautiful plane. Again, the benefit of having a small carry camera is that you can always carry it with you. Sometimes, the best camera is the one you have in your hands. Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.

Nikon 1 V1 Potpourri | Lake Mitchell Storm After a windy day, a storm loomed over the western horizon of Lake Mitchell in the early evening. This image was a simple click captured just before a late dinner while looking for a place to park at a restaurant on the lake. For more storm images, see Storm Clouds | a 7 Image Story.

Jul 5, 2021 | AF-S 70-300mm f4.5-5.6G IF-ED VR, Nikon 1 V1, Nikon 1 V1 Potpourri, Sailplane

Nikon 1 V1 Potpourri | Sailplane Sailplanes are just, very cool. Without power, they fly so quietly; much like an Eagle soars. While soaring through the air with no sound except the wind hitting the airframe, all you hear is the wind noise. It’s more like flying with the birds than flying an airplane. Soaring like an eagle with not a care in the world except one: catching your next thermal to go back up!
The Back Story The Nikon 1 V1 with 2.7 crop factor and 70-300mm zoom allowed for a variety of compositions. As this image shows, the Nikon 1 V1 and the FT-1 with the firmware update works great in continuous focus mode. Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.

Jul 4, 2021 | AF-S 70-300mm f4.5-5.6G IF-ED VR, Great Blue Heron, Nikon 1 V1, Nikon 1 V1 Potpourri

Nikon 1 V1 Potpourri | Great Blue Heron Great Blue Heron are both common and beautiful. This image was captured in the quiet before the storm, with damaging winds and hail coming tonight. The light was fading fast as I approached this small pond on my walkabout. The Heron had just a kiss of reflected light since it was wading along the corner of the pond. See Great Blue Heron | a 7 Image Story for the whole story.
The Back Story The Nikon 1 V1 2.7 crop factor sure helps to get the shot without disturbing the bird. Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.

Jul 3, 2021 | AF-S 70-300mm f4.5-5.6G IF-ED VR, Boeing E75, Nikon 1 V1, Nikon 1 V1 Potpourri

Nikon 1 V1 Potpourri | Stearman Landing Sometimes we forget where “grass roots aviation” comes from; grass runways, taxiways, or just open grass fields. This Boeing Stearman Model 75 landing on grass at the 2013 Lake City Fly-in shows us what aviation was all about in the early days. The Model 75 was introduced to the US Army Air Forces as a trainer in 1934 and remained in production until the end of WWII. It’s relatively easy to fly and simple to maintain. After the war, the demand for Stearmans remained high; used mostly as agricultural crop dusters and aerobatic air show performers. Many are still airworthy today.
The Back Story Here again the Nikon 1 V1 with its 2.7 crop factor allowed me to capture a nice image while safely positioned along the side of the grass runway. Notice I used 1/80s shutter speed to blur prop while panning to keep airplane in focus. Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.

Jul 2, 2021 | AF-S 70-300mm f4.5-5.6G IF-ED VR, Nikon 1 V1, Nikon 1 V1 Potpourri, Swan

Nikon 1 V1 Potpourri | Swan & Cygnet On my walkabout trail around a small pond, a Mute Swan family had taken up residence. Mom and child moved slowly along the bank looking for a snack.
The Back Story Again the Nikon 1 V1 with its 2.7 crop factor allowed me to capture a nice image while not disturbing the Swans. My lens was pointed through the weeds to get eye level image. Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.

Jul 1, 2021 | 1 VR 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6, Montana, Nikon 1 V1, Nikon 1 V1 Potpourri, People

Nikon 1 V1 Potpourri | Montana Hank A friend at the Gallatin River Ranch asked us to their house for dinner one night. Before dinner we took a few pictures from their deck. This image of yours truly, the ranch, and the Bridger Mountains is a decent example of a landscape portrait. The whole idea is to get a good portrait and a good landscape image in the same photograph.
The Back Story To keep as much of the foreground and background in focus, I chose auto iso, aperture priority, and f/8, then handed the camera to our host to make the click. From a compositional standpoint, I just told the host to keep me off center. Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.
